Welcome to LCHS
The animal shelter is located at 958 VFW Dr (see map). Operating hours of the shelter are Monday-Friday, 8-5, and Saturday/Sunday, 10-5. Animals surrendered by their owners are immediately available for adoption; those that are brought in as strays are kept for 3 days before they can be adopted. We make every effort to reunite owners with their pets by advertising on the radio and in the paper. Once the 3 days have passed the animal becomes the property of the Lemhi County Humane Society and is placed on petfinder.com where they can be viewed by anyone with an internet connection. Many of our animals end up leaving the county due to this national exposure.
We also serve as the only line of defense against animal abuse in Lemhi County. If you suspect that an animal is being abused either physically or by way of neglect please contact us and we will investigate. Our main objective in these cases is to help facilitate a positive outcome for both the animal and the owner. While we have no law enforcement capability on our own, we work closely with the local Police and Sheriff Departments, who provide enforcement if warranted.

The Lemhi County Humane Society is a non-profit organization located in Salmon, Idaho. Its' governing Board has seven members who oversee the operation of both the Salmon Animal Shelter and Rags & Wags, a thrift store located at 510 Main St in Salmon. Proceeds from the thrift store provide approximately 90% of the operating expenses of the shelter, with the remaining capital coming from the City of Salmon, adoption fees, and donations. 
Our shelter receives animals from not only Lemhi County, but also from Custer County and beyond. Our shelter staff provides high quality care for both dogs and cats while they are guests at our shelter. We make every effort to find appropriate homes for all our animals, which may sometimes cause friction with a possible adopter who may not be a good fit with the animal. Our mission is to place all animals into a stable environment that matches the needs of the animal with the life style of its new owner. We have found that if we don't take these measures animals end up being returned to us.
